La Risa Lynch is a Chicago-based award-winning freelance writer working for several community newspapers, including The Austin Weekly News, Chicago Crusader and The Final Call. She also has done public relations work for several grassroots political campaigns. After several public relations posts, La Risa’s first newspaper job was at the Chicago Defender. La Risa worked for eight years with Chicago Citizen Newspapers, a weekly chain covering Chicago’s Black community. She has written extensively on criminal justice, public housing and substance abuse treatment, an interest that was carried over from her time working for Streetwise and The Chicago Reporter. She has won three Illinois Press Association awards and two third place awards from the National Newspaper Publishers Association. Her hobbies include traveling, jazz, reading and reporting on Africa.
